The
University of Michigan offers its faculty members a
broad selection of benefits options.
In general, faculty members are eligible
for benefits at the University if they have at least a 50% appointment
lasting four consecutive months or longer. There may be
other eligibility requirements for individual plans. Dependents
are eligible for many of the same benefits offered to the
faculty member. Dependents include a spouse or other qualified adult and dependent children. For details on your eligibility for specific benefits, review
the Eligibility section.

Prospective Faculty
If you are a prospective faculty member, view Benefits
Highlights for Prospective Faculty.
Newly Hired Faculty
When you have accepted a faculty position at the University
of Michigan and you have received a start date from your
department, review the New Employee section to learn about
your benefits and complete your enrollment forms.
Supplemental
Appointments
The "supplemental" job/career family is eligible
for the benefits program. However, "supplemental" staff, adjunct
and visiting faculty are not eligible for the disability
plans and are not required to participate in the retirement
programs.
Since
supplemental appointments are close-ended (appointments
for a definite period of time), it is important to contact
the Benefits Office each term if you wish to continue your
benefits through periods of inactive employment. Otherwise,
University contributions cease during these periods and
you would be eligible to continue coverage through COBRA.
Lecturers
Lecturers are eligible for benefits with an appointment
of 50% or greater, lasting at least four months or greater.
For example, benefits will end in April for lecturers who
have a winter semester appointment if they do not have an
appointment in the spring or fall. If benefits are to continue,
they will be at the lecturer's own cost. |
