TIAA-CREF: Managing money for people with other things to think about

TIAA-CREF Financial Education Seminars Help Page

If you are having trouble viewing the presentations, take some simple Steps to help setup your computer for multimedia delivered on the web.

Missing or Incorrect Plug-ins
These presentations require current versions of QuickTime and Shockwave. When you begin the presentation, a script checks to see if you have the correct versions of both. If you do not have either, or if they are out of date, the presentation should identify this need and send you to the Macromedia website for the current Shockwave plug-in and/or to Apple for the current QuickTime plug-in. Follow the link and download the current versions.

If the presentation does not identify missing plug-ins and still does not launch, then you can get the plug-ins manually by clicking on these links.

Shockwave: http://www.macromedia.com/downloads/
QuickTime: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

A playback problem can also occur if you have multiple versions or Incorrect versions in your browser plug-in folders. For example, you can have a Netscape version of Shockwave in Explorer's plug-in folder. You can check for this by running a find command from your desktop for "Shockwave", and / or "QuickTime". Find will show all versions and places where they are stored. Go ahead and delete these files and try to run the presentation again, letting the presentation script collect and install the current versions.

Poor Playback
If you are experiencing choppy playback, close all programs other than the browser. For best playback performance, no other programs should be running.

You may also be experiencing a network slowdown. Even with a fast connection, additional traffic between you and your service provider may be taking up valuable bandwidth. This is something beyond your control. Please try again later.

General Setup
While these presentations are designed for a variety of computers and operating systems, there may be some system setup issues beyond the simple steps outlined above.

If you are accessing the presentation from your office, you may need to review your system setup and network access with your IT client service.

If you are accessing the presentation from your home computer, please Review the setup guide. You should also review the network access guide from your online service provider. Check the settings for your connection. For further assistance, contact your service provider.

If you wish to take full advantage of multimedia available on the web, keep all your software current. We encourage you to review the resources available and upgrade to current versions when you are comfortable. As a general guideline, unless you consider yourself a “power user,” it is best not to download upgrades the day they are available. A wait period of a month or two can protect you from first adopter bugs. Review your best information, and solicit the assistance of knowledgeable sources.
