The research group started in December of 1992 when Sunghee
Lee came to Brown University after graduating
with a Master's Degree in Chemistry from the
Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). The following year
John Bender, a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace
College, joined the group. Eric Wheatley, a senior at Brown, also worked
in the group in December of 1993 when the photo below was taken.

Kyle Litz, a graduate
of the University of Texas - Dallas,
joined the group in July of 1994. The group moved to the University
of Michigan in the summer of 1995. The hardy band is shown at a party
along the Huron river just weeks after moving out all the equipment in
one large semi truck.

Kyle and John are busy making germanium tetrachloride
(Feb. 1996). We had to do this shortly after we discovered the price of
buying the tetrachloride had quadrupled.

Things have finally settled down after the move. The group is
seen below at the summer picnic along the Huron river. Several new people came
on board in the last year. Leah Meeuwenberg,
a graduate of Kalamazoo College., joined
the group in February of 1996. Two new post-doctoral associates, Neil
Greeley and Robert Deng also joined
up in the spring of 1996. We were also fortunate to have Prof. Norman Wells
of Baldwin-Wallace College join the group
for the summer.

For the summer of 1998, we had two additional group members, Amy Mitchell joined us from Baldwin-Wallace College and Ken Nicholson from Xavier. Once again, we threw a party on the banks of the Huron River.

Salmon was flown in fresh from the Pure Food Fish Market at Pike Place Market in Seattle. Below, you can see Banaszak Holl performing his most important group duty for the year, cooking the salmon!

A thunderstorm struck at the picnic in the summer of 1998 before we managed to get a picture taken (too distracted by an intense game of croquet?) But, we did have a nice sunny day for our joint group meeting on germylene and germane chemistry.

9 germanium chemists all in the same place! What a trip!
For the summer of 1999 picnic, we had quite a great day. Finally broke the thunderstorm curse.

Jeff, Tom and Zuzanna joined the group in the fall of 2000.
Here they are, hard at work on a problem set.

A number of the group members are interested in teaching careers. Jeff, Jessica, Ryan and Mark attend the Wakonse Conference on College Teaching together in May of 2001. You can see all of them below teaching a model college course.

The group visited the Chicago ACS meeting in August 2001 en masse. We spent the week and made a total of nine presentations. Here are some pictures from the week!

We also had a holiday party in December 2001 with many of our collaborators in attendance. Here is a picture of Zuzanna with two graduate students who were just finishing a rotation in our lab, Bonnie and Robin.

The summer picnic 2002 was held at the Island Lake Recreation Center 20 miles north of Ann Arbor. The Orr and Wells research groups joined us for the day.
