Consortium Psychology Internship

(Half Time)

Pre-Doctoral Internship in Professional Psychology

One half-time internship is available at CAPS for UM Department of Psychology- Clinical Area students. Given the fast-pace of this internship site the agency prefers students in their second internship or beyond.

Training Philosophy

We seek to provide a broadly based program aimed at preparing graduates to move into a range of professional settings. Enhancement of multicultural and brief therapy skills as well as opportunities for interdisciplinary interactions are important aspect of our internships, which serve graduate students from clinical and counseling psychology and clinical social work.

Clinical Service Activities

Core intern service activities include First Appointments (a simultaneous process beginning assessment and early interventions) and brief individual counseling and psychotherapy. Clients present at CAPS with a wide range of DSM-IV diagnoses. Each semester the Consortium intern either co-facilitates a semi-structured group or psycho-educational workshop, or provides daytime crisis intervention and consultation services, depending on learning needs.

Occasionally opportunities are available to participate in outreach activities, to provide conjoint services, or to undertake LD assessments. Specialty training in assessment protocols for substance use and body image/eating patterns is provided.

Learning Supports

A minimum of 2 hours of individual supervision is provided for clinical services. Additional learning supports include: an intensive orientation; year-long Multicultural and Clinical seminars; shorter seminars on Assessment; Groups; Crisis Interventions; Clinical Supervision and Professional Issues are scheduled throughout the year. During the spring/summer terms interns undertake an individual summer reading and writing project relevant to the agency's work and the intern's interest, and extend their individual supervision with group supervision.

Interns are encouraged to attend University-wide presentations and colloquia (2 hrs. per month minimum), and are expected to attend the University's Martin Luther King Day Symposium in January. When possible interns attend the Big Ten Counseling Center conference in February. Consortium interns may also participate in a gathering of counseling center interns from four Michigan internship sites.
