Social Work Internship

(Half Time)

WELCOME!

Welcome to our CAPS Social Work intern site! We hope you have reviewed the introduction to our Training Program prior to opening this page. We are very pleased that you might be interested in applying for an internship beginning in Fall, 2008.

We invite you to carefully review all the information that is provided. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact:

Lynne Rose, LMSW, ACSW

Qualifications for Internship

Second year, 20 month, interpersonal practice students with one previous year of a practicum experience with a clinical focus. Clinical experience is needed given the internship is predominantly the provision of individual counseling.

Unique Aspects of the Placement

Extra Time Needed in Agency

Due to the following unique opportunities at CAPS, interns need to be 2nd year Master's level students in the 20 month program. Interns will also need to work a total of 20 hours in the agency per week instead of the traditional 16. We believe that this additional time will be well spent given the opportunities listed below.

Intern Experiences

The program provides opportunities for closely supervised training experiences in individual and couples brief treatment counseling, crisis intervention, and psycho-educational groups and workshops with a very diverse student population.

Staff

A team of multicultural social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and post-doctoral scholars staffs CAPS. Our training program mirrors this commitment to a multicultural and multidisciplinary work environment, as our social work interns engage in our specialized training process with psychology interns throughout their experience at CAPS.

Intensive Orientation

Students accepted as interns for Fall 2008 will be expected to participate with the new psychology interns in a nine-day orientation program from August 18, 2008-August 29, 2008. A variety of presentations, experiential workshops, and other activities are scheduled to help interns prepare for their roles and responsibilities at CAPS. These nine days will be "given-back" to each intern between the end of fall semester and beginning of winter semester.

Weekly Clinical and Multicultural Seminars

Beginning in October and ending in April, social work interns will participate in approximately eleven (11) week seminar blocks to enhance skills with brief treatment service provision; as well as sharpen multicultural self-awareness and the integration of knowledge for more effective service provision for our diverse population of students.

Outstanding Supervision

Our social work professional staff members are committed and enthusiastic about providing excellent guidance, support and mentoring for social work interns. Our interns participate in weekly, two-hour scheduled supervision with their individual supervisors.

Application and Selection Process

We believe that our social work training program is of extremely high quality. Our goal is to provide a placement opportunity that assists our interns in their own skill development, multidisciplinary and multicultural practice, and individual professional development, so they will leave our agency capable of securing jobs across the country and beginning their professional careers with confidence.

If you believe this opportunity is something you would like to pursue, and you meet the qualifications stated, please submit:

  1. A Goal Statement as required by the Office of Field Instruction and an Updated Resume to Oliva Alban Kuester. She will review and send on to Lynne Rose at CAPS for consideration.

After all the application materials have been received, Lynne and other social work staff members will review them.

Decisions about possible next steps including an interview will be made within 2 weeks of the receipt of materials.

If you are chosen to participate in an on-site interview, you will be notified of a need to schedule an interview (which is required for placement) as soon as possible after the decision has been made.

Applicants will be informed of selection decisions within 2 weeks after interviewing.

Again, we welcome your interest and if you have any questions or inquiries, please contact Lynne Rose at 734-764-8312 or email her at llrose@umich.edu
