Revising Antiquity:

Re-Imagining the Ancient World in 19th-Century Britain

30-31 January 2004

Travel and Accommodations

Travel:

Plane: The nearest major airport is Detroit Metropolitan (airport code DTW, website at www.metroairport.com), which is approximately 25 miles east of Ann Arbor. There are three main terminals serviced by most major domestic and international airlines, and Metro serves as a hub for Northwest Airlines. Given that our program begins quite early in the morning on Friday, 30 January--and that the weather in southeast Michigan tends to be snowy and/or icy in January-February, often causing delays or cancellations in flight schedules--you may find it most convenient to fly into DTW Thursday evening.

Train: Ann Arbor's rail station is located at 325 Depot St., 48104 and is serviced by Amtrak. You can contact them at 734.994.4906 or toll-free at 1.800.872.7245. Amtrak's website is located at http://www.amtrak.com.

Automobile: Parking is sometimes available through on-street metered parking or in public structures that are within walking distance, but all forms of on-campus parking are extremely limited, especially when snow restricts access to certain lots or spaces. I recommend you rely on taxi/shuttle if arriving by plane/train; Ann Arbor is very walkable (though bring waterproof snow boots if you have them and a nice warm coat!). From I-94, Angell Hall can be reached by taking the State St. exit #177, turning North, and following State. St. approximately 2.7 miles; Angell Hall is a large neoclassical building on your right, identifiable from both the giant columns and a blue sign in the front lawn).

Local Ground Transportation: Unless you are renting a car (see the airport website's "Rental Cars/Taxis" link for options), you will most likely need to hail or call for a taxi or reserve shuttle service to get from the airport to your hotel or the conference site. There is a busy taxi stand outside Metro Airport beyond baggage claim (follow signs to "Ground Transportation"). Both taxis and shuttles will usually cost anywhere from $30 to $50 one-way. Below are a number of possibilities:

Accent Transportation Service 1.800.346.9884
Ann Arbor Taxi 734.741.9000
Blue Cab Co. 734.547.2222
Metro Cabs 1.800.745.5191
Reliable City Cab 734.481.0141
Royal Limousine 1.866.697.6925
Veteran's Cab 734.662.4477
Yellow Cab 734.663.3355

Hotels:

Ann Arbor's hotel accommodations tend to be pricey (to put it mildly), so you may have better luck consulting a discount web service like priceline.com or hotels.com when reserving a room. It is best to reserve a room anytime between now and December 15; although no major event is taking place near or on campus as of now, this may change, and rooms fill quickly. I have included the hotels below because they are literally around the corner from the conference site and the restaurant where we will be having Friday dinner. The room rate quotes I have listed below are as of November 1, 2003, so they may increase slightly after the first of the year.
