Each year, the Classics
Department is pleased to present some of its top undergraduate students
with awards acknowledging outstanding achievement and excellence in their
field of study. For the Phillips and Modern Greek prizes, a language test
to determine the winner of each prize is given in March; winners are honored
at the Phillips Classical Prize Ceremony held in April. The awards are
made possible through the benevolence and generosity of University of
Michigan alumni and patrons of the Classics.
The Phillips Classical
Prizes were made possible through an endowment fund, bequeathed to the
Department in the will of Henry Phillips, a supporter of the University
who passed away in 1895.
Awarded
in memory of Henry Phillips for excellence in classical Greek and in Latin at
both the elementary and intermediate levels, as determined by written exams
given each year near the end of winter term. Winners also receive a notation
of the award on their academic records.
