DEX State Competition

Friday, February 6 to Sunday, February 8
Lansing Holiday Inn West Conference Center

-Early registration starts December 1 - January 16
-Early registration is $189
-Registration starts January 17 - February 4
-After January 16th registration is $209

Fee includes: Conference fee, two night quad lodging on site, Officer/Alumni reception, light breakfast on Saturday, entertainment Saturday evening, and Sunday Semi Formal Awards Brunch.

Members will be informed of competitive events once they are finalized on the state website (www.midex.org). We will also be having state preparation workshops in January and February.

EVERYONE should consider going! It's a great opportunity, a lot of fun, and the most important event we do as a club. We will be sending a follow-up e-mail to give you more information about it!

Please RSVP by emailing Jaryd Solomon (jaryd@umich.edu) or Ryan Cohn (cohn@umich.edu) if you plan on attending by Monday 1/5 (the day you get back from break). If you're undecided about either event, please e-mail Ryan with questions or to get more information!

February 8-10, 2008 State Competition Information

When: February 8-11
Where: Holiday Inn West Conference Center; 7501 West Saginaw; Lansing, MI 48917— 1-517-627-3211
Cost: $183 per person, checks made out to College DECA

Transportation: DEX officers and advisor will provide transportation. You can also bring your own car.

Schedule:
Friday: Meet at the West Quad parking lot by the Union.
We will leave around 4:30 and regroup at the hotel.
Get event information.
Speaker and candidate speeches from 9:00 to about 10:30 or 11:00. Dress is business casual.
There will be an icebreaker and pizza from 11:00 until 11:30-12:00.
Saturday: General 100 multiple choice marketing management test begin promptly at 8:00 am. No one will be admitted after that time.
Competitions until around 4:30 or 5:00. Dress is professional business attire.
Dinner at TGI Friday’s as a group.
DEX dance starts at 9:00 pm. Dress is casual.
Sunday: Brunch begins at 10:00 am. Dress is professional business attire.
The award ceremony is at 11:00 am.

Competition categories:
- Business Simulations—75-100 question multiple choice test and then a scenario. Prep time: 30 minutes. Presentation time: 15 minutes. Categories: Apparel & Accessories, Financial Services, Hospitality, Restaurant & Food Service, Retail Management, Travel & Tourism. Email Jaryd Solomon, jaryd@umich.edu, for the full details.
- Case Studies—1-2 participant(s). Prep time: 30-60 minutes, depending on event. Presentation time: 10 minutes. Question time: 5 minutes. Categories: Business Ethics, Business Law, Business-to-Business Marketing, E-commerce Decision Making, Human Resource Management Decision Making, International Marketing, Marketing Management, Sales Manager Meeting, Sports and Entertainment Marketing. - Prepared Business Presentations—1-3 participants. Prep time: none, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, depending on event. Presentation time: 10-20 minutes. Question time: none or 5 minutes, depending on event. Categories: Advertising Campaign, Design Presentation, Entrepreneurship, Sales Representative, Web Site Development
- Visual Merchandising—1 participant. Use a certain number of given items to create a window-type display.
- Executive Job Interview—1 participant. Portfolio required: Personal Statement (like a Michigan/bschool essay), Resume (plus 2 extra copies from judges), Work samples (projects you have worked on, presentations, flyers from your events, etc.)
You can put these papers in a folder, report cover, binder, etc. Ask Marina Rubel, rubelm@umich.edu, if you have any questions.
More information: You may only do 1 business simulation and 1 case study. You may participate in as many of the prepared events as you would like. You do not HAVE to do any event; if you only want to do a Business Simulation for example, that's all you have to do. Everyone must take the written general 100 multiple choice marketing management test.
