Demon Possession

Causes:

Also known as "demon-sickness," is a mental malady that occurs when a demon possesses and individual. Sometimes results from sin, impurity and lustful living.

Recipe:

The classic recipe for treating demon possession is "peony" or "mugwart", which puts demons to flight. However, "when a demon possesses or dominates from within," we recommend the victim, "take a spew-drink, namely lupin, bishopwort, henbane, cropleek. Pound them together; add ale for a liquid, let it stand for a night, and add fifty libcorns or cathartic grains and holy water" (1)

"Libcorns," the seeds of wild saffron, are also the accepted cure for bewitching.

.To maximize effectiveness, the tonic should be "drunk out of a church-bell, while seven masses are sung over the worts or herbs, and the lunatic sings psalms, and the priest says over him the Domine, sancte pater omnipotens" (2).
