Melancholia


Causes:

in Melancholia, "few distorted ideas occur with the bulk of intellectual functioning intact" (34)

Recipe:

 

Feverfew is recommended for "such as be melancholike, sad, pensive and without speech".

Or, "syrup made of the flowers of borage 'comforteth the heart, purgeth the melancholy' "

However, the most common cure is by far Black Hellebore, or Christmas Rose, which also "purgeth all melancholy humors". (35)
