Sorrow


Causes:

Melancholic humors cause patients with this disorder to carry sad, pensive countenances.

Recipe:

 

As in the recipe for grief, sorrow is also cast out by "that noble and famous confection Alkermes, made by the Arabians, containing the grains of scarlet oak" (43).

 

Note: You will probably notice that this is also the recommended cure for vain imaginations and sighing. This preparation has multipurposes because it is known to purge melancholy humors, which cause those various ailments.
