Method:

Stand back with whip in hand and strike patient. Repeat until desired result is achieved. According to popular beliefs, this method is especially effective at calming noisy female lunatics (38). This method is endorsed by William Shakespeare, who wrote in Act iii, scene 2 of As You Like It, that madmen deserve "a dark house and a whip" (39).
