Programs for Educational Opportunity

A cooperative agreement between the

University of Michigan
and the
U. S. Department of Education

The mission of the Programs for Educational Opportunity (P.E.O.) is to help public school districts ensure that all students have an opportunity to succeed in school whatever their race, gender, or national origin. We have provided equity-related assistance to K-12 education since 1970 in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education. Our programs include technical assistance in educational equity and dissemination of school improvement programs designed to help all students succeed.

As an Equity Assistance Center it is our mission to provide technical assistance that promotes race, gender, and national origin equity in public schools in the Great Lakes region: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
Math and Science Education - P.E.O. conducts leadership workshops to disseminate four successful parent-involvement models, Family Math, Family Science, Middle School Family Math, and Playtime Is Science, in which children and parents do hands-on activities together. The workshops are designed for parents and teachers of children from cultural groups traditionally underrepresented in the scientific work force.
