Air Transportation

U-M students with an International Student Identity Card (ISIC) are entitled to discounted travel fares and are advised to use STA travel agency to obtain reasonable airfare prices.

STA is the only student travel agency with offices in Ann Arbor, and offers everything for low-cost student travel, from airfares to rail passes, student tours and budget accommodations. You will need to bring your ISIC card number to book these fares and can usually reserve fares for 7 days before paying. Student fares are usually discounted tickets on regular commercial airlines. These tickets have all the advantages of regular full-priced fares but have lower penalty charges for changes and cancellations.

Expedia Searches for airfares, but search may not include fares at special student rates, or those from low-fare airlines.
Orbitz Searches for airfares, but search may not include fares at special student rates, or those from low-fare airlines.
Travelocity Searches for airfares, but search may not include fares at special student rates, or those from low-fare airlines.

Discount Travel Web Sites

The following web sites offer deep-discount non-refundable fares usually with special restrictions:

Priceline.com Allows you to name your own airfare but if an airline offers to sell you a ticket for that price, you must purchase it. There may be other restrictions, especially regarding exchanges, refunds and routings.
AirTreks Specializes in around the world and multi-continent tickets.
Air-Tech Ltd. Provides information on courier, space available, and regular ticket flights. They will email you an airfare quote when you fill out their request form.

Low Fare Airlines

Some airlines offer special discounts for booking a reservation online through their web site, but there may be length of stay and other travel restrictions.

The following airlines are considered to be low fare airlines and tickets can be purchased through travel agents.

Icelandair Only flies to a few European cities.
Ryanair Flies only within Europe. Check their web site for last-minute airfare deals.
Virgin Atlantic Their flights go out of a few cities on the East or West coast to limited destinations abroad.
Korean Air For flights to Asia.
Asiana Air Korea's other national airline with extensive links throughout Asia from North America and Europe.
Airtran All its airfares are discounted. Offers flights only within the United States, including flights out of Detroit.
Jetblue All its airfares are discounted. Offers flights only within the United States.
Northwest/KLM Airlines Purchase at least 3-4 weeks in advance for the best fares. Saturday stayover sometimes necessary for a lower price. Offers by far the largest number of flights in and out of Detroit.
Southwest Airlines All its airfares are discounted. Offers flights only within the United States, including flights out of Detroit.
Spirit Airlines All its airfares are discounted. Offers flights only within the United States, including flights out of Detroit.
