Q: Do current students at the University of Michigan have to be nominated by their departments or can they apply directly to CAAS?

A: Students can apply directly to CAAS for African Initiative Grants. Applications for fellowships must come through the departments along with a nomination letter from the department.

Q: Are there limitations on the expenses that can be covered by this funding? Can it be used to cover living expenses or stipends, or is it restricted to research-related expenses?

A: Grants are intended to cover expenses while in Africa. That may include transportation to/from Africa, housing and meals while there and research related expenses. Equipment such as computers, cameras etc. are not covered.
