CAAS Professors Play Key Role in King Monument Project
CAAS Professor James Chaffers and Jon Onye Lockard are part of the coordinating team for the national Martin Luther King Jr. monument in Washington D. C. The project, which began more than 30 years ago, is headed by U-M alumnus Edward Jackson. The construction of the $100 million monument, composed of a 30-foot-tall image of King emerging from a stone wall, is scheduled to begin in December 2008. The project is the result of 33 years of planning by national fraternity and project fundraiser Alpha Phi Alpha, ROMA design group, and the six-member coordinating team.
The monument’s sculptor, Lei Yi Xin, visited U-M for the first time in June to discuss the final details of the monument. Click here to see the monuments official website.
