Mission
Statements about China are not hard to find; it is more difficult
to locate accurate, balanced materials on China. This is why an
important part of the Center’s public service mission is
to provide authoritative and up-to-date information for teachers,
students and for the public at large. By enhancing the accuracy
and depth of knowledge in the public realm, the Center helps citizens
and future citizens to work productively with the people of China
for the benefit of people at home and across the globe.
Programs
The Center for Chinese Studies has a long history of engagement
in public service projects ranging from textbook publication to
service as presidential advisors. Center faculty research typically
probes issues of public concern such as poverty in China, China's
impact on the global economy, womens' issues, population studies,
political theory, or China's human values as expressed in literature
and art. In order to better serve the public, the Center for Chinese
Studies makes available this broad range of expertise through
its outreach programs. These include:
1) Developing curricular materials such as:
* textbooks
* CD ROMs
* language study materials
* lesson plans
* web-based curricular resource units such as The China Mirror
2) Grants for schools wishing to purchase books and
teaching materials
3) Teacher training and support
4) Working with State-sponsored teacher-development
programs
5) Working with State agencies to assess state policy
on Asia-related education
