Study abroad should be a part of every undergraduate's educational experience at the University of Michigan. The international exposure gained through study abroad adds a unique dimension to an undergraduate program. Students acquire important skills and experience that can enhance employment opportunities and augment further training in graduate and professional schools. Students frequently look back on their term or year abroad as the best months of their undergraduate career.
Planning early for study abroad is important, and the Office of International Programs (OIP) is committed to working with students to help them find the right study abroad program.

Where can I get more information about OIP programs?
This website is the best place to begin your study abroad search. Browse either OIP Programs or Non-OIP Programs.
Pick some programs of interest, then come to our walk-in advising hours. OIP advisors sit down with students Monday-Thursday from 2-4 p.m. during the academic year.
The OIP has two annual Study Abroad Fairs to help you decide where to study abroad. Students can learn about OIP programs from Study Abroad Alumni, faculty, and staff members. There are also representatives from other university departments such as the Overseas Opportunities Office, the Language Resource Center, Academic Advising, and the Office of Financial Aid.

Do I have to be a Junior or Senior to go abroad?
Not necessarily - Some programs are open to sophomores, so you should start thinking about study abroad early! Check out our list of programs open to those students with at least a sophomore standing.
What are the advantages of UM study abroad programs vs. non-UM programs?
- Courses taken abroad on UM programs are awarded in-residence credit; there are no hassles or worries about transfer credit
- UM programs can be paid for with UM financial aid
- OIP helps you with enrollment, orientation, and other administrative procedures
Can coursework abroad count toward my major?
Both in-residence and transfer credit may be used to satisfy distribution and concentration requirements. In either case, students should discuss their study abroad courses with general academic and concentration advisors. In general, advisors cannot guarantee that a given course will satisfy a specific requirement until after the course has been completed and credit has been granted. For more information on how to get transfer credit for Non-UM programs, visit out Non-OIP Study Abroad section.
How do I get an appointment with an OIP advisor?
The easiest way to speak with an OIP advisor is to attend walk-in advising hours, Monday through Thursday, from 2-4 p.m. Walk-in advising hours are for the academic year and the spring and summer walk-in hours vary. Please contact the OIP for more information.
I've looked at all the programs offered by the OIP and have decided To study abroad through a non-UM program. How do I start planning to go On a non-UM program? How will I know if my credits will transfer?
Visit our Non-OIP Study Abroad section to get more information.
I'm interested in interning or working abroad. Does the OIP have information about this?
The OIP has limited information on internships and work abroad. Some of our programs, such as the London Parliamentary Internship and the Australian CIC Internship, offer an opportunity for work abroad, but most are course-based programs.
For more information about interning, working and volunteering abroad, visit the International Center's Overseas Opportunity Office.
Can I talk to a former participant?
Yes! Email the OIP (oip@umich.edu) to speak with an alumni. Our E-Advisors are excited and willing to share their stories. Find out, first-hand, about your program. This information is peer-to-peer and does not necessarily represent the Office of International Programs.
