During my international travels I am frequently asked to provide information on summer doctoral programs to enable faculty members to pursue their degree, as many find that they are unable to take several years from work and family responsibilities, but can handle short, concentrated periods of study.

I conducted an electronic survey of the group International Network of Doctoral Education, and a number of responses were received. I provide them below; we will update this from time to time; please note that this cannot be considered an exhaustive list , but only those that were mentioned.

  • The University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center School of Nursing offers a distance accessible PhD program in Nursing. Students travel to Denver, CO three times a year for 1-2 weeks each time. Courses in the doctoral program are either fully online or include a 1 week intensive and completion online. Doctoral students therefore enroll in 1-2 courses each semester, fall, spring, and summer with each course taught in a one week intensive session on campus and the remainder online through the end of the semester.

  • Dr. Sara Fry, Boston College School of Nursing, USA, writes that their PhD involves three years academic study; after the first year on campus, students return home the first summer for pilot work; also, during the third year they are working on the dissertation, and some return home for data collection.   • Dr. Margarethe Lorensen, Institute of Nursing Science, Oslo University, Norway, writes that while that Institute does not now offer summer option, it plans to collaborate with several other universities for a European PhD; if funded, this program will offer summer courses.   • Duquesne University School of Nursing offers a PhD program in nursing on-line. Students from overseas enroll while they stay in their home countries. On-site annual seminars are conducted on campus to familiarize the students with the university, faculty and other peers. On-line seminars meet synchronously and students hold discussions via the computer. Faculty are available between seminars via e-mail and telephone; small groups of students engage in small group projects on-line as well.
     
  • Villanova University College of Nursing is announcing the launching of their PhD program in Nursing; the focus of the program is on nursing education.  It is taught via summer intensive sessions; In June, students will study on-campus; in spring and fall semesters courses are taught via Distance Learning.
