Faculty or Staff-Led Group Travel to Countries with a Travel Warning

Faculty or staff planning to take students to a country under US State Department or Centers for Disease Control travel warning must get advance approval from ITOC and from the Dean(s) of the schools and colleges of the participants. Faculty are strongly encouraged to consult closely with their Deans and other colleagues about the feasibility of their proposed travel plans, to review carefully pertinent issues of safety, security and health, and to share this information with all students taking part in the trip. The Office of International programs has developed a checklist of pre-departure preparations and onsite procedures for faculty taking undergraduates overseas. Trip leaders are urged to consider alternative destinations as a back-up if permission is denied.

Faculty leaders must complete the Group Travel to Countries with Travel Warning [link .pdf B] form, and obtain the signature of the Dean (or designate) of the schools or colleges whose students are taking part.

All student participants are required to sign Terms and Conditions of Participation for Students Intending to Travel Abroad form, which should be returned to ITOC with this form. In addition, undergraduates must provide the signed and notarized Parent Acknowledgement of Terms and Conditions of Participation for Students Intending to Travel Abroad.

Requests should be submitted in the semester prior of travel, and at least two months in advance of the departure date. Materials may be faxed to ITOC at 734-764-3229. ITOC will respond within seven business days.

Permission may be denied or withdrawn if safety or security conditions deteriorate in the planned destinations.
