Individual Student Travel to Countries with a Travel Warning

Any student traveling under UM auspices or with UM funding to a country under a travel warning issued by the US State Department or Centers for Disease Control must get advance approval from the International Travel Oversight Committee. Students are strongly encouraged to consult closely with faculty and advisors about the feasibility of their proposed travel plans, and to review carefully pertinent issues of safety, security and health, and to discuss their plans and all information with families. Students are also urged to consider alternative destinations as a back-up if permission is denied.

Each student must complete the Individual Student Travel to Countries with Travel Warning form. Undergraduates must obtain the signature of the Dean (or designate), and graduate students must obtain the signature of their academic advisor.

All students must also sign and submit the Terms and Conditions of Participation for Students Intending to Travel Abroad form. In addition, undergraduates must provide the signed and notarized Parent Acknowledgement of Terms and Conditions of Participation for Students Intending to Travel Abroad.

All materials should be submitted at least two months before departure. These may be faxed to ITOC at (734) 764-3229. ITOC will respond within seven business days.

Permission may be denied or withdrawn if safety or security conditions deteriorate in the planned destinations.
