LSO
2007-2008 Season
Important Information for LSO Musicians
Rehearsal Schedule
The LSO's eighth season of blending music and science will kick off on Sunday, August 26, 2007, with a general meeting for all past and prospective members. It will begin at 7:00 pm in the Macintosh Theater at the U-M School of Music's Moore Building on North Campus, and will offer the opportunity to get information, ask questions and sign up for an audition time. Auditions for all seats will be held on the evenings of Tuesday Sept. 4 through Thursday Sept. 6. Please note that the audition process has changed from previous years.
On Friday, Sept. 7 the LSO will hold its semi-annual Concerto Competition to choose a soloist for our winter concert. Visit the Concerto Competition page to read the competition rules, and email orchestra@umich.edu by August 10 if you intend to compete.
Visit the Concerts page for more information about LSO concerts.
Audition
music is now available online see below. All perspective LSO members, it is important
that you fill out a web form so that you will be added to the email list
for updates and announcements. Audition music will also be available at
the mass meeting.
All prospective LSO members are expected to audition. The four factors
that the music director will weigh include (in no particular order) playing
ability, orchestral need, prior LSO membership, and UM life sciences affiliation.
The final decision on participation is made by the music director. In
the past, everyone who has auditioned on a string instrument has been
able to play in the LSO. On the other hand, given the limited wind spots
in an orchestra and the high interest level (for example, we have had
30+ auditioning on flute), it is unlikely we will be able to take all
wind players. Interest level for each instrument changes from year to
year, however, and we encourage everyone interested to audition. In the
case where there are a limited number of spots, and there exist members
of the U-M life sciences community who can fill those spots, they will
take precedence over those not affiliated with the U-M life sciences community.
The "sign
up" for a specific audition time will occur at the mass meeting. The mass meeting will be at 7:00 pm on 8/26/07, at the Macintosh Theater, School of Music. If you
cannot attend the mass meeting and cannot have someone sign up for you,
please email us at orchestra@umich.edu Auditions will be held September 4-6, 6:30-10:00 pm at the School of Music, rooms 2027 and 2039.
We
ask that you prepare for the audition the following short excerpts (click
on the link or links below that correspond to your instrument and save
the files to your computer before printing them). Notein many cases,
there are two short excerpts instead of one longer one. If three excerpts
are given, choose only two to perform. Violin players, please prepare the Beethoven Egmont Overture excerpt and either the Violin I or Violin II excerpt from Venus (Planets). You may choose Violin II excerpt if you want to be considered only for the Violin II part.
For principle position auditions, please prepare an extra piece a
3-5 minute solo of your choosing.
For
contrabassoon and bass clarinet auditions, you will be asked to play a short
3-5 minute excerpt (of your choosing) from a piece that you have prepared.
The final roster for the LSO's 2007-2008 season will be sent out by email the week of Sept. 10, 2007.

LSO Attendance Policy
The LSO realizes that members of the life sciences community are extremely
busy; however, accepting a position in the LSO also means accepting a responsibility
to your fellow musicians to learn your music, attend rehearsals, and attend
concerts. If you are worried about potential conflicts with LSO rehearsals
and concerts, please contact us at orchestra@umich.edu
before auditioning. Regular unexcused absences will result in dismissal
from the orchestra.
