This
page will list programs that provide research and training
opportunities to diverse groups of students and environmental
professionals. Some of these programs are university based,
others might be at research institutions while others might
be in environmental organizations or government agencies.
- The
National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)
http://www.niehs.nih.gov/
The mission of the National Institute of Environmental
Health Sciences (NIEHS) is to reduce the burden of human
illness and dysfunction from environmental causes by understanding
each of these elements and how they interrelate. The NIEHS
achieves its mission through multidisciplinary biomedical
research programs, prevention and intervention efforts,
and communication strategies that encompass training,
education, technology transfer, and community outreach.
- The
Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC)
http://invasions.si.edu/
The
Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC), located
on the shore of Chesapeake Bay, is a leading national
and international center for research in the area of non-native
species invasions in coastal ecosystems. SERC has developed
the largest research program in the U.S. to focus on coastal
invasions.
- The
Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program
http://www.lsa.umich.edu/urop/
The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)
at the University of Michigan is one of several initiatives
created to improve the retention and academic achievement
of under-represented students on the University of Michigan
campus. The program includes both minority and non-minority
students, but the program still maintains its original
emphasis on underrepresented minority students and an
emerging focus on women in science students.
