The Middle East and North Africa Scholars Workshop is an interdisciplinary organization of students and professors who study or work in this region. Our activities are made possible by the generous support of the Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop initiative. What we do The group meets bi-weekly to present and discuss new research about the histories, politics, cultures, and societies of the MENA region, and to discuss research techniques and obstacles. During most meetings, we will discuss pre-circulated draft works by graduate students. In addition, we hope to occasionally host works-in-progress presentations by UM faculty and scholars from nearby institutions, and to hold workshops addressing research challenges faced by scholars in the region. Our goals We aim to contribute to the UM community of MENA scholars by creating an informal space for discussing members' research-in-progress, sharing fieldwork and research advice particular to the MENA region, and reviewing recent scholarship on the region. Currently, our participants come from the departments of Anthropology, Near Eastern Studies, History, Political Science, History of Art, and the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies. We hope to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, so we invite participants doing work in a wide variety of social sciences, humanities, and applied disciplines.
