2008 Program

US-to-China Program Dates: May 18 - Aug 3, 2008
China-to-US Program Dates: June 29 - Aug 23, 2008

A total of about 20 students, 7 from around the US, 6 from UM, and 7 from PKU, will work closely with the members of their host laboratories, and will have opportunities to interact with students and others in their host country. This is an excellent opportunity for American and Chinese students to experience living and working in another country. Participants will have the chance to form personal and professional relationships that will enrich their perspectives on chemistry and on the world. Original research projects that cover the breadth of scientific interests are available in both countries.

Thanks to the University of Michigan and Peking University Joint Institute, a robust structure exists to manage the communication and organization of programs between Ann Arbor and Beijing. We are contracted with the Joint Institute to provide a number of attractive features. In addition to arranging simple thinks like housing and transportation, the Joint institute is working with us to offer a terrific on-site orientation program for the US students during the first 2 weeks of the stay in Beijing. The orientation program, which we fondly call the "boot-camp," begins in Ann Arbor, and includes: morning sessions of intensive language instruction, noontime lunches with PKU faculty and students, afternoon sessions on history, culture, and living/getting around in Beijing, and an evening meal with different faculty, staff, and student guests at a local restaurant in order to get a guided experience with local cuisine prior to the start of the research phase. Although not as elaborate, there is also a series of orientation and cultural events for the PKU students while they are on the Ann Arbor campus, in addition to the active and supportive group of Chinese students and scholars who are on campus, including many PKU alums.

UM & PKU have strong traditions of hosting foreign students on their campuses as well as placing their students in foreign settings, and the corresponsing Offices of International Programs/Relations have provided tremendous guidance and support for both US and PKU students.

As a part of the program, 2 UM faculty members will accompany the students to Beijing and participate in the "boot camp" sessions.

Financial support for the UM PKU summer undergraduate research exchange program is provided by the University of Michigan, Peking University, Pfizer Global R&D, and the National Science Foundation.

UM PKU Program includes: a fellowship stipend, housing (in US: shared room in a residence hall; in China: shared apartment), and all travel expenses (local and international, visas). All students have internet access to their existing home university/college e-mail accounts. US students receive a modest food allowance. All students need to pay appropriate health insurance coverage.

NOTE for Chinese students: There is no cost associated with applying to the program. However, there is a 1000 RMB fee that must be collected from those students who accept the offer to participate in this program. This will be handled at PKU.

Later in the summer, there is a brief faculty exchange built into the program, with one faculty member from both schools spending about a week at the partner university.

Financial support for the 2007 UM PKU pilot program was provided by the University of Michigan, the National Science Foundation, and the Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation.

A note about the future: 2008-2010 International REU Site

In 2007, we will submit proposals to the US and China National Science Foundations in order to establish an exchange program for US and Chinese undergraduate students to participate in summer research at the University of Michigan and Peking University.

From our experience with the Summer 2007 pilot program in Chemistry, we plan to involve a multidisciplinary cohort of research students, in both directions, adding one new discipline in each of the years from 2008-2010.
