How to Apply
Nomination
There are two basic ways to apply to the Michigan Chemistry Fellows program. An interested postdoctoral candidate will identify a Michigan Chemistry
faculty member who has an available postdoctoral opening and effectively apply for that position. The faculty member may then
choose to nominate the candidate for the Michigan Chemistry Fellows program. Please use the links at the left to each
Chemistry subdiscipline to identify research groups in the department, and then contact the faculty members individually regarding
availability, qualifications, project ideas etc..
Alternatively, candidates interested in exploring possibilities of research at Michigan can be nominated by a faculty member at
another institution, such as the candidate's Ph.D. supervisor or another collaborator. Additionally, current and former postdoctoral
fellows in this program will also be able to nominate candidates. Candidates nominated through this route
who are invited to submit full applications will be asked to prepare a research proposal in an area relevant to one or more groups in the department.
Candidates must be nominated by a Michigan faculty member, an external
faculty member, or a current or former member of the post-doctoral fellowship
program. Nominators are asked to submit the following information by email to the selection committee at
chemfellows@umich.edu.
- 1. Nominee's full legal name
- 1. Nominee's e-mail and postal address; telephone and fax numbers
- 3. Nominee's (anticipated) date of Ph.D. and Ph.D. institution
- 4. Nominee's CV
- 5. A letter of recommendation
- 6. Nominator's current e-mail address, title, and professional mailing address
The Chemistry Fellows Program is designed to bring new scientists to the Michigan campus.
Individuals will be ineligible if they are a member of Michigan department prior to the offer of a fellowship.
Scientists already affiliated with the University of Michigan are ineligible.
Application
Nominees invited to submit a full application package are requested to provide the following information prior to the application deadline.
- 1. A short research proposal (3 pages maximum)
- 2. A CV
The deadlines for receipt of all application materials will be September 30, 2008.
Evaluation
The post-doctoral program board will evaluate and select the applicants.
Selected nominees will be invited to campus for a visit with the prospective
post-doctoral mentor, members of the program board, and other interested
parties (such as partnering institutes). This visit will be the final step
prior to making a formal offer. The visit will provide the candidate an
opportunity to confirm his or her interest in the faculty mentor's program,
as well as to identify possible collaborations or other research programs
that are better suited to the candidate's research goals.
Announcements of Awards
The awards for the September deadline (now past) will be announced in
January 2008.
