About Us
The Division of Molecular Medicine & Genetics is part of the academic Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. The mission of the Division is to combine insights into human genetic disease states with basic scientific research to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying these disorders. The ultimate goals of the faculty are to improve early diagnosis, treatment and cure of human disease. Ongoing research programs by Division faculty are broad ranging and include the study of cancer, diabetes, coagulopathies, hearing loss, developmental disorders and immunodeficiencies. This scientific milieu provides a diverse and fertile environment for the training of undergraduate, graduate and medical students as well as post-doctoral fellows.
The Division is comprised of 22 primary and joint faculty, including members with co-appointments in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute as well as the Life Sciences Institute. Recently, four new faculty have been recruited to the Division: Dr. Xiaochun Yu, Ph.D., Assistant Professor from the Mayo Clinic; Dr. Zhe Han, Ph.D., Assistant Professor from UT Southwestern; Dr. Jun-Lin Guan, Ph.D., Full Professor from Cornell University; and Dr. Cheng-Yu Lee, Ph.D., from the University of Oregon. Thus, the Division is dynamic and will continue to expand as it aggressively recruits the best and the brightest faculty in both genetics and molecular medicine. The Division of Molecular Medicine & Genetics conducts its research programs throughout the University of Michigan Medical School campus, including the Comprehensive Cancer Center, MSRB I, II & III, and the Life Sciences Institute. Division faculty also participate in a new program in Molecular Mechanisms of Disease which is housed in the recently completed, state-of-the-art BSRB building.
