Purpose: The Michigan Union shall be a University center for the primary purpose of enhancing the quality of campus life and favorably affecting the complete educational experience at the University of Michigan. The Michigan Union shall serve as a unifying force in the lives of students, faculty, staff, and alumni by providing opportunities for interaction and for the cultivation of loyalty to the University of Michigan. The Michigan Union Board of Representatives shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Director of the Michigan Union. The Board shall work to fulfill the purpose and to accomplish the objectives of the Michigan Union.
Composition: The Board of the Michigan Union shall consist of nineteen (19) voting members; twelve (12) students and seven (7) non-student representatives of the University community. Students who serve on the Board shall remain enrolled as at least part-time students, as defined by their respective school or college, at the University of Michigan. The Board shall consist of the following persons:
- Nine (9) students at-large, who shall serve one-year terms, taking office at the last meeting of the Board in April. New Board members will be expected to attend the March Board meeting but will not obtain voting rights until the April Board meeting.
- MSA has the responsibility to appoint one representative to the Board.
- One representative of the University Activities Center.
- One student representative from the Arts and Programs Office.
- Two representatives of the alumni appointed by the Alumni Association.
- Two representatives of the faculty.
- One representative of the Office of the Vice President for Development.
- One representative of the Office of the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer./LI>
- One representative of the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.
Committees: There are currently four internal committees of MUBR: Art, Facilities, Outreach, Scholarship, and Friends of the Michigan Union. Each committee consists of a chairperson who is responsible for the organization and efficient functioning of the committee. It is a clear expectation that all members of the Board will play an active role on at least one committee each semester. In addition, members of MUBR sit on the Michigan Union Office Space Allocation Committee, which is responsible for the assignment of office space in the Michigan Union to student organizations.
Meetings: The Board meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. Meetings typically last 2 hours. Meetings during the spring and summer terms may be called on an as needed basis. Committees meet bi-weekly for approximately one to two hours, with additional meetings as needed.
Responsibilities of Board Members: If appointed, Board members will be expected to:
- Attend all full Board meetings
- Attend all committee meetings
- to serve as a communications link between the Michigan Union and students, faculty, staff, and alumni; to represent and be accountable to these constituencies in the formulation of Michigan Union policy guidance; and to actively promote and develop the role of each constituency in the activities of the Michigan Union.

- Gain leadership experience
- Work together with other students, faculty, staff and alumni on assorted Union issues
- Gain practical experience in the areas of policy setting, public relations, event planning, budgeting and long-range planning
Time Commitment: Experience has shown that, in order to fulfill their responsibilities, Board members spend an average of roughly one hour per week on Board-related activities. Committee chairs spend between one and two hours per week while the Chair and Vice Chair spend approximately four to six hours per week on Board-related affairs. It should be noted that these are average and that the amount of time spent on Board activities in any given week will vary with the issues being discussed.
Selection Process for Student at Large Positions: Applications are due by Wednesday, January 30 by 4:00pm to room 1310, first floor of the Michigan Union. Applications may be mailed via campus mail (1310 Michigan Union 1308) or hand delivered. A selection committee made up of MUBR members will screen these applications. Applicants will be notified shortly thereafter as to whether or not they will be given further consideration for a position and, if so, an interview will be scheduled on Sunday, February 10, 2008.
