Michigan Union Ticket office

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy football tickets here?

No. There is only one place where you can buy athletic tickets: The Athletic Ticket Office. This applies to all University sporting events. We are, however, one of 5 locations where you can validate a student football ticket for use by a non-student. Go here for more information on ticket validation.

Can I get Ticketmaster tickets for a show in New York from you?

No. Ticketmaster's system is regional. Outlets in the Midwest region can access tickets in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and Toronto. Check ticketmaster.com or call them at (248)645-6666 for more information about national ticket issues. According to Ticketmaster's outlet policy, we can only provide information and sales for Ticketmaster events in person, over our counter.

What's a service charge?

A service charge is an additional fee placed on the price of a ticket purchased in advance. The revenue generated by face value ticket sales is distributed among the artist, concert promoters, production company, venue and so on. So, in order to maintain operating costs and continue servicing the public, MUTO, Ticketmaster and other ticket vendors apply a service charge to the ticket price. MUTO sets its service charges far below competing ticket brokers to ensure we are offering students and the Ann Arbor community the best price around.

Why can't you specify seats over the phone?

The fastest method of pulling tickets for our phone customers is to divide the responsibility of receiving orders and pulling the tickets into two distinct positions. As such, our phone representatives do not have ticket terminals and cannot access specific seating information. Because ticket availability changes rapidly, we can only assure you will receive the best available tickets at the time of your order. We are more than happy, however, to take down a seating request. While we will do our best to fill your request, we can never guarantee specific seating over the phone. Should you require knowledge of the exact location of your seats, visit us in person and we’ll help you find the tickets you want.

What is Work-Study?

Work-Study is a form of financial aid awarded to students directly from the Office of Financial Aid. It is University subsidized employment, where a portion of your working wage will be paid for as part of your financial aid package. This eases the financial burden for potential employers, making it easier for work-study students to find jobs on campus. If you are wondering whether or not you have work-study, check with the Financial Aid Office at 734.763.6600 or financial.aid@umich.edu

Football Ticket Validation questions

Why are student IDs required?

The reason for the ID policy is to ensure that all U-M students who want to buy season football tickets can do so. The demand for student tickets fluctuates each year. Instead of capping the number of student tickets available, U-M student leaders supported the idea of requiring a student ID to accommodate all student ticket requests. To encourage active student participation at football games, the athletic ticket office provides students with tickets at about half the public ticket price. It is only fair that if a non-student uses a student ticket, s/he should pay the public ticket price.

Can I use student tickets to get my family or friends into the game?

Yes, they can go to the game if you find students who are not using their tickets. You may purchase validation stickers for $27 at any of the five validation locations. Once a ticket is validated, no refunds will be issued and your friends and family may use the tickets without a student ID.

Do I have to wait until the week of each game to validate a ticket?

No, you may validate up to 4 student tickets per week for any home game. For instance, if you know at the beginning of the season that you cannot attend four of the home games, you can validate all of these tickets the week before the first game.

Can I validate a ticket at the stadium on game day?

No. However, MUTO will validate from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm every Saturday.

Can I give my ticket to another student without paying the validation fee?

Yes. Any student can use a student ticket without validation.

Is the student section general admission under this new policy?

No. The seat number on your ticket is the specific reserved seat for anyone using that ticket.

Will I need to get to the games earlier?

Yes. It is recommended that you arrive at the game earlier than in previous years as visual ID checks and increased security measures will slightly delay entry. Gates open 2 hours prior to kickoff.

Do I have to enter a specific gate to be admitted with my student ID?

No. You may enter the stadium at any gate, provided you present a student ID along with your football ticket. Family and friends with a validated student ticket may enter at any gate.

What if I lost my ID?

Ann Arbor students who have lost their MCards must obtain a replacement prior to a football game during normal business hours at an MCard station. There will be no MCard station open on game days! Please visit mcard.umich.edu for more information. Dearborn and Flint students must obtain a replacement from their respective campuses.
