:: fellowships and gsi positions

Graduate students with high scholastic records can be considered for Fellowship awards and Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) appointments. All requests for funding and GSI positions through the Department of Near Eastern Studies must be made by completing the Departmental Funding Application Form. Complete applications should include a statement of purpose and any additional supporting documentation. Applications should be submitted to the Graduate Student Services Office located at 4113 Thayer Academic Building by the appropriate deadline.

Fellowships
Fellowship and scholarship awards come from a variety of sources and range from partial tuition scholarships to full fellowships providing stipends of up to $16,135 per academic year.

The Department of Near Eastern Studies administers the following fellowships:
Donald Leroy Waterman Fellowship in Biblical Studies
Rackham Block Grant
The College of Literature, Science and Arts Regents' Fellowship
George and Celeste Hourani Memorial Fellowship in Islamic Studies
Friends of Near Eastern Studies Fellowship in Ancient Studies

Because of Departmental fellowship funds are limited, students are encouraged to seek alternative methods of financing their studies.

Other Fellowship Resources
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are available for PhD-track students with an interest in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Turkish. For more detailed information, consult the FLAS website at http://ii.umich.edu/funding/gradstud/flas.

The Rackham Graduate School offers assistance in searching for internal and external sources of funding on their website: http://www.rackham.umich.edu/financial_assistance/.

Graduate Student Instructor
A Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) is a salaried teaching appointment. A GSI generally conducts two or four discussion sections weekly in one of the introductory courses, or teaches language courses. Primary responsibilities include instructing, reading and grading papers, holding office hours and tutoring. GSI's with at least a quarter-time appointment (.25 - 10 hours per week) receive a complete tuition waiver with staff benefits. Appointments at a lower rate receive partial tuition waivers. The Department has a limited number of GSI positions each fall and winter semester. To be considered for a GSI position in the Department of Near Eastern Studies, please complete the Departmental Funding Application..
