Welcome to the U of M Student Mediation Services (SMS) web site.

Founded by a student in 1995 and now run by elected leadership, SMS gives students the unique opportunity to mediate their disputes rather than ignoring them or engaging in violence.

SMS's primary goal is to provide the highest quality mediation services available at no cost to University of Michigan students. Mediations are also performed in the Ann Arbor community in coordination with the Washtenaw County Dispute Resolution Center. This gives student mediators an excellent chance to build skills and assist the community at the same time.

SMS is a student group at the University of Michigan that receives funding from various parts of the University.

What is Mediation? How successful is it? What do mediations accomplish?

Student Mediator Training is a rigorous and rewarding experience for anyone interested in conflict resolution or who would like to have greater skills for personal relations. The training is a thirty hour commitment and often takes place during two weekends.

There are many ways in which you can help out the group. Programs, workshops, marketing, and group events are open to all U-M students.

If you are interested in mediating a dispute or in attending a mediator training, you may contact us via e-mail or phone.
