Audition for The Sopranos!
Next Auditions: Fall 2008

Thanks for your interest in The Sopranos! We remember how nervous we were during auditions, but don't worry! We'll do our best to make you feel at home and enjoy yourself. Here's the run-down on the process to help you prepare for a great audition...

Email us at sopranos@umich.edu to sign up for an audition time. We allow ten minutes for each audition, but it usually doesn't take that long. There's also a short information sheet you'll need to fill out before the audition, so plan to arrive a few minutes early.

Our audition has four parts:

Vocalization

We'll start by warming you up and testing your range with some scales. You can sing them on any syllable you'd like, and we'll guide you on the piano.

Tonal Memory

We'll test your tonal memory by playing 5-7 notes and having you sing the sequence back to us. You can ask us to repeat it as many times as you'd like, so don't stress.

Sight-Reading

We'll give you some music in C Major and play the starting note. You can take as much time as you'd like practicing it, but remember that it's often better just to go for it rather than trying to perfect it on the spot. We know this is usually the most dreaded part of the audition, but don't panic if you learn better by ear; your sight-reading will improve as you practice with us.

Solo

This is the fun part of the audition, for you and us both.  Please prepare a short solo from any song you'd like, particularly a verse and a chorus or approximately one minute of singing. We recommend choosing something that best showcases your voice but also pick something with which you're comfortable. This is your chance to really blow us away, so use it to your advantage!

Still have a question? Email us at sopranos@umich.edu.  One of the officers will be more than happy to help you prepare. See you at auditions!
