ANN ARBOR/YPSILANTI READS

Tatum book cover>>featured book: “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” And Other Conversations About Race, by Beverly Daniel Tatum (New York: Basic Books, 2003)

The second annual Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads took place in early 2004.

The goal of the Read was to promote reading and civic dialogue through the shared experience of reading and discussing a common book. For 2004, the program encouraged readers of all ages to explore our progress in race relations in the 50 years since the landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling in the case of Brown v. Board of Education, which ended legal segregation in public schools.

A screening committee of about a dozen colleagues from Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor met over the spring and summer, and reviewed more than 100 titles. The committee recommended three books, and the selection committee then chose Tatum’s book from that short list.

Librarians at the district libraries also recommended a broad selection of titles in the young adult and children’s book categories, so that families could read and talk together.

Please see the Ann Arbor District Library’s webpage for further information.
