Angela Ruggiero Question and Answer Session

When and how did you get your start in hockey?
When I was 7 years old, my father signed me up to play hockey alongside my younger brother Billy and older sister Pamela. My sister played for 2 years, but then it was just Billy and me on a boys' team for the next few years.

What is the best advice you have ever received from a coach?
Pretend there is a scout in the stands at every practice. By doing this, you force yourself to go as hard as you can each and every minute, regardless of the drill, your competition, or who is really watching. Hopefully, by going 100% all of the time, you not only become a better hockey plater faster, but you area also truly ready when there really are scouts or when tryout time comes in the fall.

What does representing your country in international play mean to you?
I can still remember the very first time I put on a USA jersey...I was 15 years old and I was representing the Junior National Team in Ottawa. I took so many pictures to remember the moment. To look down at teh USA crest and realize that you have reached your dream and then to play against the best players in the world is absolutely amazing. I have been on the USA National Team for well over a decade now, competing on 3 Olympic Teams and 9 National Teams. It never gets old to hear your anthem and represent your country.

How much pride do you take for your role in girls and womens' hockey?
I take the fact that I am a role model for so many girls very seriously. When I was 9, I met my first NHL hockey player in person and I recall what an impact he had on me. Whenever I meet an aspiring young player now, I remember how important my words and actions are. This role led me to write my autobiography Breaking the Ice in 2005 to share all of my experiences with young girls and hopefulyl inspire them to reach their goals.

As a Harvard graduate, education obviously means a lot to you. How would you describe the student-athlete experience?
I would recommend playing college hockey to any young hockey player as the ultimate experience. I think there are so many opportunities out there for young girls to play and so many scholarships available to them. Playing college hockey was the best way for me to get a great education for when hockey is over, while having a blast in the process. I learned so much about myself, about others, how to set goals, time management, and gained invaluable self-confidence. I think playing college hockey is a realiztic goal for any young hockey player. I hope to help any participant of my camps achieve this goal because it was one of hte best experiences of my life.
