Continuation of Benefits for Retirees and Survivors of Retirees

Retired faculty or staff members, their dependent spouse or other qualified adult, and their children are eligible for coverage under the Dental Plan only if they were covered at the time of retirement of the faculty or staff member on which eligibility is based. Dependent eligibility is subject to the same restrictions as dependents of active faculty or staff members.

Dental Choices at Retirement
If you are enrolled in Option 2 or Option 3 when you retire, you can continue the coverage through COBRA during the first 18 months of your retirement. If you do continue coverage, you must pay the entire cost of the coverage plus a 2% administrative fee. After 18 months, you will be automatically enrolled in Option 1. If you do not elect to continue Option 2 or Option 3 into retirement under COBRA, you will be automatically re-enrolled in Option 1 at the time you retire.

Eligible Dependents of a Deceased Retiree
Dental coverage that is in effect at the date of death of the retired faculty or staff member may be continued at University expense by an eligible dependent spouse or other qualified adult, and eligible children, if any,if:

  • the spouse was married to the retired faculty or staff member at least one year prior to death; and
  • the spouse was married to the faculty or staff member before their retirement from the University, and
  • the spouse's or other qualified adult current or former employer does not offer a dental program; and
  • the faculty or staff member completed 10 years (5 years if hire date was prior to July 1, 1984) of continuous service with at least a 50% appointment during the entire duration of the 10-year (or 5-year) period; and
  • the spouse or other qualified adult completes necessary forms to enroll as a survivor, and includes enrollment of any eligible children.

When Coverage Ceases
Coverage for the spouse or other qualified adult and any eligible children of a deceased retiree under the contract will continue until one of the following occurs:

  • death of the spouse or other qualified adult;
  • remarriage or ineligibility of other qualified adult; or
  • employment of the spouse or the other qualified adult with an employer who offers dental coverage.

This policy is subject to change for future retirees and survivors of retirees.
