Sigma Lambda Gamma Beta Chapter New Member Information

The benefits gained from joining a Greek Organization will last beyond the college years. Sigma Lambda Gamma is a great opportunity for young women to develop the leadership, academic, and social skills necessary for success during college and the real world. Additionally, Sigma Lambda Gamma exposes young women to diverse cultures and connects Sisters with other successful college women. Sigma Lambda Gamma prides itself in upholding the five principles set forth by our founders:

Leadership Opportunities
Throughout the school year the sorority sponsors campus events in celebration of these five principles. The planning of these events gives sisters the opportunity to develop leadership and academic abilities by writing proposals, developing budgets, securing funding and advertising. The executive board of the chapter is comprised of our undergraduate members. The members work together on goal setting and implenting programs, both internally and externally.

Community Service
Giving back and reaching out to our community is a huge part of being a sister of Sigma Lambda Gamma. A few years ago, year sisters raised funds for a town in Honduras still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Mitch and for Lupus Research at the University of Michigan Hospital. In addition, sisters sponsored a "Campus Day" for students from SER Metro. At "Campus Day" the sisters gave the students an university tour and held a panel discussion about the benefits of higher education.

Academics
A recent study found that students participating in a Greek organization have a higher college graduation rate than non-Greeks. Since Beta Chapter's inception in September of 1999 we have given academic and moral support to our sisters. We are proud that all of Beta's sisters have completed their undergraduate degree and that some are continuing their education in Masters', Ph.D. and other professional programs.

Cultural Awareness
Sigma Lambda Gamma is a diverse sorority encompassing all ethnic backgrounds and is open to strong, determined, and hardworking women. As an inclusive organization, we encourage all ethnicities to inquire about our organization to help us learn more about their culture and for us to share our own. We feel that the exchange of other cultures is just as valuable as our emphasis on the Latino culture.

Networking Opportunities
Perhaps the most amazing part of joining Sigma Lambda Gamma is the opportunity to meet and network with other college women from campuses across the country. An added advantage of joining the largest Latina-based sorority in the nation is that you have access to our extensive chapter base. Both undergrads and alumnae serve as a resource for career and academic advice.
