THE NINE MUSES, Roman mosaic 3rd cen. AD.

Kalliope, the goddess of music and song, sits beside Homer.  Notice the extent to which Homer is portrayed as a typical Roman.  Homer is shown wearing the traditional Roman garb and laurel leaf crown, which was primarily worn by emperors, heroes, and poets.  Finally, this is one of the few known works which illustrates Homer as a young man.
