Current Astronomy Events in Southeast Michigan (July 2008-January 2009)

The following lists events hosted by the University Lowbrow Astronomers, plus a few selected events hosted by other organizations. All events are hosted by the Lowbrows unless otherwise indicated. Events hosted by the Lowbrows (with the exception of monthly club meetings) may be cancelled if conditions are unusually cold or if it is cloudy. If in doubt, call (734) 332-9132 after 4PM the day of the event to determine the status.

• Friday, September 5 and Saturday, September 6, 2008. (6:00 PM to Midnight). The 12th Annual “Astronomy at the Beach” at Kensington Metropark. Hosted by GLAAC (the Great Lakes Association of Astronomy Clubs).
• Friday, September 19, 2008. (7:30PM). Monthly Club Meeting.
• Sunday, September 21, 2008. (2:00-4:30PM). Open house at the Radio Telescope at Peach Mountain (hosted by the University of Michigan Astronomy Department).
• Saturday, September 27, 2008. May be cancelled if it’s cloudy. (Starting at Sunset). Open House at Peach Mountain.
• Saturday, October 4, 2008. May be cancelled if it’s cloudy. (Starting at Sunset). Open House at Peach Mountain.

Other Current Events

These events may be free of charge or may require a small charge. Follow the links for more details.

• The University of Michigan Exhibit Museum holds planetarium shows on a regular schedule.
• On selected Friday nights the Angell Hall Observatory holds open houses where the public can look through the telescopes on top of Angell Hall [Directions to Angell Hall].
• Sherzer Observatory (on the campus of Eastern Michigan University) also holds regular open houses.
• The University of Michigan Physics Department holds a series of multimedia presentations aimed at the general public called Saturday Morning Physics.
• The Cranbrook Institute of Science has a variety of science related activities aimed at children and adults.

• June 8: Updated the flyer for Astronomy at the Beach.
• June 9: Updated the map on Astronomy at the Beach.

Changes made during May 2008 include the following:

• May 11: Added three new articles from Reflections, the club newsletter.
• May 11: In addition, added four new articles from Reflections (for a total of seven on this day).
• May 17: Added four new articles from Reflections, the club newsletter.
• May 23: Added a video to Astronomy at the Beach.

Changes made during April 2008 include the following:

• April 2: Added an amination of the lunar eclipse of February 20/21, 2008.
• April 13: Added a new article from Reflections, the club newsletter.
• April 19: Updated list of club officers on club information page.
• April 19: Updates to Astronomy at the Beach.
• April 26: Added photographs from the University of Michigan Exhibit Museum of Natural History.
• April 27: The McMath 24 inch telescope is now operational, update the Lowbrow “Open Houses at Peach Mountain Observatory” information page.

• February 28: Added a set of photographs taken during the lunar eclipse of February 20/21, 2008.
• February 29: Added a new panorama of Big Bear Solar Observatory.

Changes made during January 2008 include the following:

• January 15: Added astrophotos from the Okie-Tex Star Party.

Changes made during December 2007 include the following:

• December 4: Added new information to the observer’s guide.
• December 6: Added new comet photos, one of comet Holmes and one of comet Lovejoy.
• December 6: Added three new articles from Reflections, the club newsletter.
• December 9: Added a photo of Comet C/2006 VZ13 (Linear).
• December 9: Added a photo taken at Lake Hudson.
