Welcome
to the Graduate Chemistry Program
at the University of Michigan
Thank you for your interest in
our graduate program. We have many exciting opportunities
for chemical scholarship. Over 250 excellent graduate
students are already pursuing projects in over 50 research
groups. You will find answers to many questions you
may have about our program in the information provided
below. This past year the average GPA of admitted students
was 3.7 with the average GRE Quan score of 725; GRE
Verb score of 534 and GRE Writing score of 4.7. For
Fall 2007 we have 44 students entering and of those
8 are international students.
What
are the research opportunities at the University of Michigan?
The Chemistry
Department is located on the University of Michigan's central quadrangle
next to the departments of biology, geology, and physics. In addition,
the Programs in Applied
Physics and Biophysics
and the Schools of Natural
Resources and Pharmacy
are also adjacent to Chemistry. The University and Science
libraries are located across the quad. The new
Life Sciences Institute and the Medical
School are just two and four blocks away respectively. Chemistry's
central location fosters many productive interdisciplinary interactions.
Strong research
programs are available in the areas of Analytical,
Biological,
Inorganic,
Materials,
Organic,
and Physical
chemistry. A number of training grants are available for students
interested in the Biological and Materials areas. Special fellowships
sponsored by pharmaceutical companies are available in the area
of Organic chemistry.
Financial
Support
The
Chemistry Department provides 12 months of financial support during
each year of your program tenure through a combination of teaching
and research assistantships, training grants; along with fellowships
that pay full tuition and subsidized health care benefits, as well
as a generous stipend. This support frees you to concentrate on
research and full-time study.
Fellowships
The
department has a variety of internal fellowships available to support
graduate students. A number of National Institutes of Health, National
Science Foundation, and Department of Education fellowships are
also available.
What is the City of Ann Arbor like?
The Chemistry department is located on the central Quadrangle with major retail and restaurant areas located just west and south of the quad. Downtown Ann Arbor is just a short ten minute walk away! Ann Arbor has a population of ~120,000 is located in beautiful, wooded residential neighborhoods surrounding the university. The Huron river runs through town just north of the central campus. The city and private businesses sponsor recreational and cultural activities. For a schedule of everything going on, take a look at the Ann Arbor Observer.
Ann Arbor is routinely rated one on the top cities to live in the United States. Maps to many of the nearby entertainment, shopping, and sports venues can be found here.
Information on Graduate Housing is available.

Take a Tour
Admissions
Is there
an application deadline? When is the best time to apply?
A complete application (this
includes the supplementary materials) must be received
by the Department by December
15, 2007 for International
Students and January 15, 2008 for Domestic and
Permanent Resident Students. The official GRE and
TOEFL scores must be received by these deadlines
as well as all supporting materials. The earlier
you get a complete application to us the earlier
your application will be reviewed.
The
Admissions Committee will begin reviewing
complete
applications the beginning of December
and making decisions shortly thereafter
and running through the deadline.
Is there
an application fee?
The
$75 application fee is waived if you
are a US citizen or permanent resident.
If you are an International applicant,
you must submit the application fee
before your application will be reviewed; this
fee will not be waived
How will
you review my application?
The admissions committee consists of the Chair, Adam Matzger, and six other faculty members to ensure expertise in all areas of chemistry, and Aiko Nakatani. We will review your file as soon as it is complete beginning in December. We pay careful attention to the letters of recommendation and your prior research experience. We will also study your college transcript and the results of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). We will be able to review your file most quickly if you submit it online.
When will
I hear if I have been accepted to Michigan?
We will strive to respond as quickly as possible after your file has become complete and a decision has been made by the committee. The most common problem we encounter is not receiving your recommendation letters; please register your recommenders online when you apply. Please request letters from your professors several weeks prior to our deadlines.
Students in the US who are offered
admission will be invited to attend one of two Recruiting
Weekends to learn more about our program, the department,
campus and city.

How do I apply?
You will apply online. The link below
will take you to the online application. Please remember
to register your recommenders at the start of the online
process. The Graduate School no longer has paper applications,
therefore applying online is the only way and the most
efficient and easiest way to apply. Please do not list
your University lab address as your "Current Address” on
the application unless it has a full street number and
street name. Do not use Post Office Box numbers because
if we use an overnight delivery service to send notices
it will not reach you at a P.O. Box.
Please also review the Rackham Graduate School's Admissions website; Rackham is the "umbrella" over all graduate doctoral programs at the University. Their website will provide valuable information about the application process. Their website is at http://www.rackham.umich.edu/Recruitment/prospective.html
