Neil
Marsh has been awarded
the Doctor of Science degree (Sc.D.) from
Cambridge University. This degree is confered
on alumni of the University who have made
important and extensive scholarly contributions
to an area of research as demonstrated
by a substantive body of published work.
Vincent
Pecoraro is the
recipient of a 2008 U of M Distinguish
Faculty Achievement Award.

Goodson on being awarded
a Collegiate Professorship effective September
1, 2008, for a five-year renewable term.
This is one of the highest honors the
College and the University can bestow
upon an eminent member of the faculty.

Goodson is the recipient of a 2008 Faculty Recognition
Award for his excellence in research,
teaching and service.

Coppola has been
selected as the recipient of an 2008 LSA Excellence in
Education Award for his special contributions to the
College's educational mission.

Kubarych has received a NSF Career Award (2008).
Mike
Morris has been awarded
the 2008 Rackham Distinguished Graduate
Mentoring Award.
Nicolai
Lehnert is a recipient
of a Japan Society for the Promotion of
Science (JSPS) Invitation Fellowship to
visit Japan for one month in summer of
2008. This fellowship sponsors a visit
to Japan for an extended period of time
to do research. It is aimed at promoting international
scientific cooperation and exchange.
Anna
Mapp is the 2007
recipient of the Novartis Young Investigator
Award in Chemistry.
John
Wolfe has received the 2008-2009 GlaxoSmithKline
Research Scholar Award.
Theodore
Goodson is the recipient of the ACS Award
for Minority Development (2007).
Roseanne
Sension has been elected a Fellow
of the American Physical Society. This
recognition is limited to no more than
one half of one percent of the total
membership. Dr. Sension is honored for
pioneering work on dynamics in the condensed
phase, steady state and ultrafast measurements
of excited state dynamics, and optical
control of chemical reaction dynamics.
Robert
Kennedy has been elected
a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science (AAAS). This recognition is bestowed upon members by
their peers. Dr. Kennedy is honored for his distinguished contributions
to analytical chemistry including development of techniques
for ultrasensitive analysis and their application to neuroscience
and diabetes research.
Gary
Glick has been elected
a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement
of Science (AAAS). This recognition is bestowed upon members
by their peers. Dr. Glick is honored for his distinguished
scholarship in the field of organic chemistry, particularly
the discovery of molecular targets, mechanisms and development
of potential therapeutic compounds for the treatment of autoimmune
diseases.
Melanie
Sanford has been named a 2007 DuPont Young Professor.
The DuPont Young Professors Program is designed to provide
unrestricted startup assistance to promising young and
untenured research faculty.
Melanie
Sanford has
been named a 2008 ACS Arthur C. Cope Scholar. The awards
are sponsored by the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Fund and administered
by the American Chemical Society to recognize and encourage
excellence in organic chemistry.
Barry
Dunietz has been awarded
a Certificate of Appreciation from the 2007 James T. Neubacher
Award Committee for his activities in raising consciousness
on campus about disability issues.
Jim
Coward has been elected
(one of three) to the Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame.
The Medicinal Chemistry Division of the ACS selects this group
of people based on their contributions to teaching, research,
and service in the area of medicinal chemistry.
Carol Fierke has been elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for distinguished contributions to bio-inorganic chemistry, particularly the mechanisms of zinc metalloenzymes and the ribozyme ribonuclease P, and the development and use of biosensors.
Congratulations to Mark Meyerhoff on his appointment to the Philip J. Elving Collegiate Professorship in Chemistry. Professor Meyerhoff’s lecture took place on September 27th in the Rackham Amphitheater, a public reception followed.
James E. Penner-Hahn has agreed to serve as LSA Associate Dean for the Natural Sciences for a three-year term beginning September 1, 2006. He is currently serving as Chair of the Biophysics Research Division and has just finished a term on the College Executive Committee. Jim has previously served as associate chair of the Chemistry Department and Associate Vice President for Research.
Congratulations to Anna
Mapp for being awarded the 2007 Eli Lilly Award in
Biological Chemistry. from the Division of Biological
Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. This
award recognizes outstanding research in biological
chemistry of unusual merit and independence of thought
and originality. The
award was presented at an award symposium held during
the 234th ACS National meeting August 19-23, 2007, Boston,
MA.
