In the Second Year students should continue to improve their command of the structures listed under the First Year Goals, as appropriate to their rising skill level.

Structural Knowledge:

  • Recognition and moderate use of verbal adjectives and adverbs (participles and gerunds)

  • Comparatives and superlatives

  • Telling time: familiarity with more than one system

  • Complex sentences

  • Verbs of motion - more systematic knowledge of unprefixed verbs

  • More prefixes of verbs of motion, e.g.:

  • Voice (here:  , as it is used with verbs like    )

  • Increased knowledge of forms of "irregular" nouns, verbs

  • Increased knowledge of prepositions and case requirements of verbs (e.g.  )

  • Expand discourse-management devices (esp. particles)


Functional Abilities:
Beyond the list of functions contained in the First Year Goals are several listed below, which require more complicated grammatical constructions (e.g., the imperative as one way to give directions).
  • Express a wish

  • Express congratulations

  • Give directions

  • Make and respond to invitations

  • Express counterproposals
