User in wheelchair with service dogThe Adaptive Technology Computing Site (ATCS) at the University of Michigan is an ergo-assistive work-study computing environment open to students, faculty and staff. The site is designed to accommodate the information technology needs of physically, visually, learning, and ergonomically impaired individuals. Specialized hardware and software is provided at 9 workstations, some of which are equipped with adjustable height work surfaces and all of which are equipped with adjustable seating and 21 inch or larger high-resolution monitors.

Each workstation is oversized to accommodate a personal assistant or canine companion. In addition to its role as a work-study area, the site also serves as a source of computer accommodation information for the entire campus. The ATCS was designed in 1995 by the Herman Miller Furniture Company in conjunction with the University of Michigan Barrier Free Computer Users Group (email: bfcug@umich.edu) Major support for the ATCS is provided by Information Technology Central Services (ITCS) as a part of its Campus Computing Sites program.
The University of Michigan Information Technology Central Services (ITCS), Shapiro Undergraduate Library and the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) jointly sponsor the ATCS.
