Printing in Sites (Black & White):
The 2007 Basic Computing Package allows students to print up to 400 b&w
pages per term at no cost in Campus Computing and ResComp Sites.
(Double-sided printing counts as two pages.) Additional b&w pages are
charged at $0.06 per printed side.
More information about the 2007 Basic Computing Package, including
allotments for faculty and staff, can be found on ITweb at
http://www.itd.umich.edu/your-account/bcp.intro.html
Poster Printing in
Sites: NEW
Campus Computing Sites now provides poster printing. You can print up to 42”
wide B & W and/or Color. Currently poster printing is only available at Angell Hall
and costs $8.40 per linear foot. We will NOT provide ANY refunds
based on any issue other than technical issues with the printer, i.e. bad ink
cartridge, paper jam, etc.
Copy Card Program in
Sites: NEW
Sites Printing has been in development with the Entree Plus office for almost
a year, the end result is the copy card program. This new service is finally
available at Angell Hall and allows students to make photocopies on Campus
Computing Sites multi-fuction devices (MFD's) with a simple swipe of their
mcard. The real capstone of this new service is the mcard serves as
authentication as well as a portal to the BCP of 400 "free" page sides.
Therefore student's can make copies without ever having to set up a
pre-funded account, purchase an exclusive "copy-only card", or dig for
loose change to make copies. Sites Printing also worked to ensure that these
MFD's serve as printers as well, the days of a copy-only machine are behind
us. Sites Printing plans on a more widespread deployment of these devices
sometime after the new year.
mPrint:
mPrint is a web-based printing application that allows PDF documents to be
sent to an authenticated web site with instructions to print to any
networked campus printer at a specific time. This allows students using
Wireless or personal computers in residence halls to print to a specific
Sites printer. mPrint is available online at http://mprint.umich.edu
[Requires Authentication].
Sites Using Recycled Paper
Campus Computing Sites has switched to recycled paper for all of our black
& white printing services. The acid free recycled paper is made from 30%
post consumer recycled fiber and it is Environmental Chlorine Free
(ECF).
How many pages have I printed?
You can determine how many pages you've printed at
https://accounts.www.umich.edu/umce-bin/umce. (Note the "s" at the end
of "https" which indicates a secure site. You will need to enter your
uniqname and password.).
Billing methods for b&w beyond 400 pages and all color printing are:
- Students' charges are billed directly to their University student
account and costs will appear on their tuition statements.
- Faculty and staff must have made prior funding arrangements using a
departmental chartcom. Complete the
UMCE Top Level Account Application (PDF) and submit it to the ITCS Accounts Office
(itcs.accounts@umich.edu) or walk-in service at the UM Computer
Showcase).
Duplex Printing in
Sites:
All Campus Computing Sites printers can print double-sided (duplex). You need to manually
select the duplex (2-sided) option. This procedure may vary from printer to
printer. When printing duplex, you are charged per printed side of paper. A
regular 8x11 black & white duplex print-out would count as 2 pages of your Basic
Computing Package allocation.
Why doesn't Sites set duplex-printing as the default in
Sites?
Color Printing in Sites:
Color printing is available in the following locations: Angell Hall Courtyard,
Caident, Computer Science & Engineering, Duderstadt Center, the Medical School's
Learning Resource Center, Michigan Union Computing Site, School of Art & Design,
School of Education (SEB), School of Natural Resources, School of Public Health
Library, School of Public Health Computing Site, School of Social Work, Shapiro
Undergraduate Library Lower Level, Science Learning Center, SORC, and the South Quad
ResComp site. The color printers are available for use by all current UM Students,
Faculty & Staff.
NOTE: Color printing is not included in the Basic Computing Package. At
all color printing sites, each printed page costs $0.40. These color-printing
charges will be billed to student or departmental accounts. Selecting the duplex
option for a 8x11 color print-out will result in charges for 2 color printed pages
($0.80).
CAUTION! If you print to a color printer, you will be charged for a color print
job regardless of whether the item printed was black & white or color.
Tabloid Printing in Sites:
Tabloid (11 x 17) printing is available in the following locations: Angell Hall
Courtyard, Duderstadt Center, Michigan Union Computing Site, School of Architecture,
School of Art & Design, School of Music, and the School of Natural Resources
Classroom. Tabloid black & white printing does count against the Basic Computing
Package per term printing limit.
NOTE: Tabloid printing is charged as two 8x11 pages per printed-side.
Printing a single-sided black & white tabloid page will be charged as two 8x11 black
& white pages to your account (2 pages or $0.12). Printing duplex on a tabloid
printer will result in 4 times the basic charge (4 x $0.06 = $0.24).
Color-Tabloid Printing
in Sites:
Color-Tabloid (11 x 17) printing is available on the color printers in the following
locations: Angell Hall Courtyard, Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Duderstadt
Center, School of Natural Resources, School of Public Health Computing Site, and the
Shapiro Undergraduate Library Lower Level.
NOTE: Tabloid color printing is charged as two 8x11 pages per
printed-side. Color printing is not included in the Basic Computing Package.
Printing a single-sided color tabloid page will be charged as two 8x11 color pages
($0.80). These color-printing charges will be billed to student or departmental
accounts. Printing duplex on a color-tabloid printer will result in 4 times the
basic charge (4 x $0.40 = $1.60).
Sites Printing Guidelines:
Please keep in mind that Sites printing is provided to support the
academic goals of the University. Course work and research-related
printing meet this criteria, but flyers advertising social events do not!
Please limit your printing to academic purposes only and use photocopiers
for multiple copies whenever possible. ITCS and the Provost's Office hope
to be able to keep service levels high (and the price of printing low),
but our ability to do so depends in part on whether students use printing
resources in a responsible and appropriate way.
- DO NOT insert different paper or other materials into
the printers (ie. resumé paper or transparency sheets). These
objects may jam and damage the printer's inner components, for which you
will be held responsible.
- DO NOT take paper from the Sites printers. Removing paper from
the Sites printers is considered as an act of theft, and disciplinary
action will be taken against you.
- DO NOT power-off the printers. If you are experiencing any
problems with the printers, contact the Sites staff or report the problem
by calling 64-SITES, and select option #1.
Printing Tips:
And don't forget that by following a few environmentally-responsible
practices we can significantly reduce the amount of unusable output we
create in the Sites. A few simple resource-saving techniques include:
- Remember to spell-check all documents
- Use the "print preview" feature before printing
- Don't print out e-mail unless absolutely necessary
- If you must print e-mail, copy-and-paste several messages into a Word
file to reduce the number of pages you need to print out.
This is a good tip for working with Web-based information, too.
