Eavesdropping beetles
U-M researchers and their colleagues have discovered that predatory beetles can detect the alarm signal released by ants under attack by parasitic flies and then use that information to guide their search for safe egg-laying sites on coffee bushes. The findings, which may have implications for pest management, are the first documentation of interactions mediated by ant pheromones.
