Congratulations Class of 2011
U-M’s Spring Commencement takes place at Michigan Stadium on April 30. Graduating students will now join the ranks of the largest (and proudest) living alumni group in the world. As President Mary Sue Coleman would say, “For today, goodbye. For tomorrow, good luck. And forever, Go Blue!”

U-M’s biggest supporter
A. Alfred Taubman and his wife, Judy, are greeted with cheers as they enter a celebration in honor of his latest gift to the A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute that brings his support of innovative medical research at U-M to a total of $100 million. Overall, he has given more than $142 million to U-M.

Thanking Mother Earth
In celebration of Earth Day, North Quad hosted an Andean Thanksgiving Ceremony known as Despacho a Pachamama in Quechua, the language of the Incas, where a series of offerings (seeds, candy, grains and others) were presented with reverence and gratitude to the Earth.

Celebrating the power of words
The 80th Hopwood Awards Ceremony honored promising young writers at U-M last week. Established to encourage creative work in writing, the Hopwood Program provides approximately $170,000 in prizes each year for the best novels, screenplays, nonfiction, short fiction and poetry.

Paws for a break
Therapy dogs from Therapaws of Michigan recently visited the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning during an event celebrating the last day of classes. They were brought in to provide stress relief for students as they prepared for their final exams.

Epic Epoch
The U-M School of Art + Design’s “Epoch” exhibit features film, installation, traditional and new media work created by graduating seniors. It runs through May 1 at all Art + Design exhibition venues and also includes off-site shows and events.

Football fundraiser
The U-M football team’s annual spring game takes place at Michigan Stadium on April 16 at noon. Traditionally a free event, the athletic department will be offering special giveaways to encourage donations for the new C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital scheduled to open this fall.

Quantum Leap
The U-M solar car team’s 2011 vehicle Quantum is built and ready for testing. Currently the national champions, the students will be competing in the 1,800-mile World Solar Challenge across Australia in October.

The 11th annual Latino Culture Show, a U-M student produced showcase, takes place April 13 at 7 p.m. at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater. The program unites campus and community by celebrating Latino culture through dance, music, poetry and drama.

April foolishness
The 5th annual FestiFools takes place in downtown Ann Arbor on April 3. Part of the U-M Lloyd Hall Scholars Program initiative, this fanciful parade brings students and community together to create unique public art. There will also be a FoolMoon illuminated sculpture procession on April 1.
