London Calling

Twenty-six U-M students recently took part in a two-week “Behind the Scenes at the London Olympics” study-abroad program through the Center for Global and Intercultural Study and the School of Kinesiology. The students met with Olympic executives, corporate sponsors, programming committees and other officials directly related to the staging of the 2012 London Olympics.

Maize and blue go for gold

As the Summer 2012 Olympics open, there will be 26 current and former Wolverines going for the gold. Historically, more than 200 U-M students and coaches have participated in the Olympics, representing 24 different countries. Neil Gardner (pictured) represented Jamaica in the 400-meter hurdles when he was a U-M student in 1996.

Providing a world of experience

The William Davidson Institute's Global Impact Internship Program is currently sponsoring 21 summer fellows in 14 countries over three continents, including one U.S. location. They are working on projects in the areas of healthcare, entrepreneurship, education and energy in emerging markets.

Pioneers of green

Long before words like "sustainability" were household terms, U-M professors and undergrads at LSA's Biological Station in Northern Michigan studied topics such as climate change, and 100 years later, the facility is on its way to becoming carbon neutral.

Sustainable computing

Faculty and staff recently toured the new eco-friendly Modular Data Center on North Campus. U-M is the first university in the nation to build a structure that uses outdoor air instead of expensive, industrial air conditioners to cool computing equipment. The center’s innovative design could potentially save $50,000 per month in energy costs.

Art is all around

The 53rd annual Ann Arbor Art Fairs, a group of four award-winning art fairs, attract up to 500,000 visitors to the streets of downtown Ann Arbor and the U-M campus every summer. This year, more than 1,000 artists will be displaying their work from July 18-21.

American Solar Car Challenge hits town

U-M’s Solar Car Team is competing in the American Solar Challenge. The 1,650-mile, eight-day, eight-state race came through Ann Arbor on July 16. The team’s car, Quantum, is currently in the lead by about two hours. Go Blue!

Improving extreme-weather prediction

A new $151.7 million NASA satellite project, led by U-M professor Christopher Ruf, called the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System is expected to make more accurate measurements of ocean surface winds throughout the life cycle of tropical storms and hurricanes.

Shining light on dark matter

A recent discovery, led by a U-M physics researcher, confirms the prevailing theory of how the universe's current web-like structure evolved. For the first time, scientists have directly detected part of the invisible dark matter skeleton of the universe, where more than half of all matter is believed to reside.

U-M on Capitol Hill

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., meets with U-M students in the Public Service Intern Program (PSIP) to discuss issues and his role as the state's senior senator. PSIP brings dozens of U-M students to Washington each summer for internships. This year, more than 50 students are working at various government and non-profit organizations.

Battery of tests

A chemical engineering graduate student recently worked on building a liquid battery cell in the H.H. Dow Building on U-M’s North Campus. Unlike normal batteries, the liquid battery decouples power and capacity; enabling better control over battery performance.
