Radical transformation?
This year the Port Huron Statement, a manifesto written by the Students for a Democratic Society that called on activists to revolutionize society, turns 50. Scholars and alumni will discuss its impact at a campus conference titled, “A New Insurgency: The Port Huron Statement in Its Time and Ours,” which takes place Oct 31-Nov 2.

Making a world of difference
President Mary Sue Coleman shared highlights of the upcoming academic year during the President’s Leadership Breakfast on Oct. 30. Her address announced exciting new initiatives and provided updates on U-M’s key focus areas of global outreach, sustainability, the arts, innovation, diversity and history.

Wade for me!
Students, alumni, faculty and staff recently gathered for the U-M School of Natural Resources and Environment’s annual campfire at Saginaw Forest during homecoming weekend. The event traces its roots back to the school’s early “field days” in 1906 and features favorite SNRE traditions including wader races and log sawing competitions.

Celebrating the harvest
Visitors at the U-M Sustainable Food Program's Harvest Festival at Matthaei Botanical Gardens recently enjoyed locally grown food, music, and activities for all ages. The festival promoted awareness about local food options by featuring dishes made from fresh ingredients grown on a two-acre parcel at the gardens that is tended by U-M student volunteers.

Uncovering Stone
Award-winning journalist Bob Woodruff will interview one of the most controversial directors in Hollywood, Oliver Stone, for the next Penny W. Stamps Series presentation on Oct. 25. Woodruff, who was severely injured while reporting in Iraq, will discuss with Stone the motives behind his latest documentary “The Untold History of the United States” and other political works.

Pulling for each other
Participants in the U-M Scholars Program in Dental Leadership recently took part in several teambuilding and leadership exercises. A select number of pre-doctoral dental and dental hygiene students are brought together to develop leadership skills and the ability to leverage their expertise, not just in dentistry, but in education, research, business, politics or law.

Wolverine art
Art is all around at U-M. Michigan Today has created a slideshow featuring the stories of some notable pieces on campus. This bronze statue created by Dan Heikkinen, a gift of the Engineering Class of 2001, keeps a watchful eye on North Campus. A similar wolverine by the same artist can be found inside Crisler Arena.

Life-saving donations
Wolverines for Life has created a video to inspire participation in this year’s Wolverine-Buckeye Challenge and Blood Battle where U-M and Ohio State try to beat the other school in collecting organ donor sign-ups and blood donations before their teams meet on Nov. 24. For the last two years, U-M has won both challenges. Go Blue!

Protecting the Great Lakes
U-M and 20 other U.S. and Canadian research institutions are forming a Great Lakes Futures Project of the Transborder Research University Network. The group plans to propose research and policy priorities to help protect and restore the Great Lakes and to train the next generation of scientists, attorneys, planners and policy specialists who will study them.

Wallenberg’s legacy
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Raoul Wallenberg’s birth. A 1935 graduate of U-M, Swedish diplomat Wallenberg saved the lives of tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews during WWII. In 1990, U-M inaugurated the Wallenberg Medal for outstanding humanitarian work in his honor. The 22nd Wallenberg Medal will be awarded on Oct. 23.

The U-M Law School created a Tumblr page that chronicles the day-to-day life of law students at Michigan. It is based upon a new book that illustrates, through photos and stories, 100+ reasons why the school is special. Included on the list is the strong sense of community and diversity among U-M law students.

Homecoming 2012
U-M’s Ann Arbor campus will be abuzz with excitement this weekend as thousands of alumni come back to campus and visit with former classmates and faculty at dinners, tours, and tailgates. Many will go cheer on the Wolverines when they face Illinois at Michigan Stadium on Saturday. Go Blue!

A group of incoming U-M School of Social Work graduate students is welcomed as they approach the front door of the Children's Advocacy Center in Detroit. They were out kicking off the school year with a Community Service Day where they volunteered at human service agencies and non-profits in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Detroit.

Saluting Betty Ford
U-M pays tribute to Betty Ford, a trailblazing First Lady who brought candor and integrity to our national conversation, at 3 p.m. on Oct. 11 in Rackham Auditorium. The event will also be live web-streamed on the Ford School of Public Policy’s website. Mrs. Ford passed away in July 2011. Her late husband, President Gerald Ford, was a U-M alumnus.

Impressions from the past
The U-M Department of Musical Theatre presents “Sunday in the Park with George,” a musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine about inspiration — in art and in life. The show runs from Oct. 11 to Oct. 21 at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre. Its story follows the great-grandson of Post-Impressionist painter George Seurat on his journey to restore his artistic vision.

In-depth learning
With the support of an International Institute fellowship, a graduate student from U-M’s School of Natural Resources and the Environment dives into her internship with the Oceanic Society in Micronesia. While there, she helped survey the health of coral reef habitats and contributed to a climate and fisheries adaptation plan for local leaders.

Fall in love
There’s nothing quite like taking a stroll through campus on a beautiful autumn day. Its nearly 14,000 trees add dramatic color to the scenery. U-M is one of 115 colleges and universities nationwide to be certified as a Tree Campus USA. Last year, 531 more trees were planted on campus to make it even more beautiful and environmentally sustainable.

Debut dance
The University Musical Society presents the debut of the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, a contemporary ballet troupe that has developed a worldwide following with its European aesthetic grounded in American sensibilities, at the Power Center on Oct. 6-7. There will also be a special one-hour family performance on Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.

Supporting the future of nursing
The U-M School of Nursing GENESIS program recently received a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It offers mentoring, pre-college support and summer programs for middle and high school students and a retention program for admitted U-M students who are underrepresented in the health professions.

Inside the black box
An immunologist, a U-M microbiologist and a U-M chemical engineer are working on a simulation that will help develop new and better treatments for tuberculosis. A new College of Engineering website details how they are pulling together the results of thousands of experiments to develop a coherent picture of how TB attacks the body and how the body responds.
