Powwowed

The 41st annual Dance for Mother Earth Powwow hosted by the U-M Native American Student Association takes place April 6-7 at Crisler Arena. It is one of the largest student-run powwows in the country and was named by USA Today Travel as one of “10 great places to be wowed by American Indian culture.”

Visual culture and archives

The U-M Bentley Historical Library is hosting a symposium titled "Visual Culture and Archives" on April 4-5 at Rackham Amphitheatre. The two-day event featuring international scholars, artists and archivists working in a variety of media is in honor of Francis X. Blouin's 32 years as the library's director.

Making room for teamwork

Two College of Engineering students construct a model at the Wilson Student Team Project Center. With its 20,000-square-feet of dedicated space and facilities on North Campus, the center allows students to gain critical hands-on experience in the design, assembly, machining, electronics and painting of team projects.

A dangerous experiment

Women students now outnumber men on most American college campuses. This is the culmination of a slow revolution that began nearly a century and a half ago, when U-M and a handful of other schools launched what was called a “dangerous experiment” — the “coeducation” of women and men in 1870.

Protecting the rainforest

U-M researchers have found that protected areas such as national parks and biological reserves have been more effective at reducing deforestation in the Amazon rainforest than protected zones that allow controlled removal of natural resources. Areas established to safeguard the rights and livelihoods of indigenous people performed especially well.

Big Ten gymnastics title

The No. 4-ranked U-M women's gymnastics team (17-1) looks to win Big Ten title No. 20 on March 23 when it competes at the 2013 Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Mich. The Wolverines, the meet's No. 1 seed, will start the meet on floor exercise, followed by vault and uneven bars before closing on balance beam.

Finding their match

In an annual ritual called Match Day, 161 future doctors who will graduate in May from the U-M Medical School recently opened white envelopes to find out where they will spend the next three to seven years as residents training in their chosen medical specialties.

Ken Burns: Unscripted

The Penny W. Stamps Speaker Series on March 21 features Ken Burns, the acclaimed director and producer of historical documentaries. As part of the 51st Ann Arbor Film Festival, he will also take part in a screening of his new film, “The Central Park Five,” on March 23rd at the Michigan Theater.

Race Card Project on campus

National Public Radio’s Michele Norris greeted students on the Diag to kick off the Race Card Project. U-M is the first American university to partner with the project, which asks people to provide a six-word description of their views on race. She also met with President Mary Sue Coleman and executive officers, who submitted their descriptions.

Public health in action

Ten U-M students recently traveled to Grenada to participate in projects to improve community health. While a second group of students conducted public health work in Texas with local community organizations. Both of these trips were through the Public Health Action Support Team, a program in the School of Public Health Office of Public Health Practice.

Nation’s largest prisoner art show

U-M’s Prison Creative Arts Project 18th Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners takes place March 19-April 3 at the Duderstadt Center Gallery. This year’s exhibit includes more than 300 works by over 200 artists. In connection with U-M’s theme semester on race, artists submitted works conveying how they respond to challenges of race, individually or collectively.

Testing the waters

Members of BLUElab, a U-M student organization, recently climbed into the Huron River to collect water samples to test a biosand filter. BLUElab coordinates projects that develop environmentally, culturally and economically sustainable technologies. Its membership consists of more than 100 undergraduate and graduate students from the College of Engineering, as well as other disciplines.

Best graduate schools

U-M continues to be recognized for its academic strength nationally in the latest rankings by U.S News & World Report. Among the programs ranked each year in the "Best Graduate Schools" — business, education, engineering, law and medicine — U-M maintained top-14 rankings in all five categories in the 2014 edition.

After hours

The U-M Museum of Art invites the community to spend the evening of March 14 enjoying art at its latest, free After Hours event. Current exhibits take viewers around the globe to from West Africa to London to the Himalayas, and even to Wonderland. There will also be live jazz and curator chats throughout the night.

Go Blue! in China

A photo taken by 2009 U-M graduate George Dong in Jiuzhaigou Valley National Park recently won first place in the Go Blue! category of the International Institute’s photo contest. He was in Southwestern China as a U.S. Student Fulbright grantee researching access to higher education for minorities.

Black Detroit 21

In partnership with the Stamps School of Art and Design, the U-M Detroit Center presents the Work: Detroit gallery exhibition, “Black Detroit 21.” Works from 11 artists address social concerns within Detroit's African American community by exploring the topics of identity, territory, protest, sexuality and transition. The show runs through March 22.

Leaders & best in health care

A new independent analysis of the quality, safety and efficiency of care provided by more than 3,000 hospitals across the country rates the U-M Health System in the top 100. This is the latest in a series of recognitions for the care that UMHS provides at its three hospitals and 40 outpatient health centers.

The Warrior Scholar

A story about the extraordinary life of Professor Emeritus of Law, Yale Kamisar, is featured on the U-M Heritage site. As a tough kid from the Bronx, he joined the Michigan law faculty in 1965 and went on to fight for the rights of the accused. He is known as “The Father of Miranda.”

Give Kids a Smile

Dental and dental hygiene students, under the supervision of faculty from the U-M School of Dentistry, provided free teeth cleanings, sealants, X-rays and simple fillings to 27 children on a recent Saturday morning. They were taking part in the American Dental Association’s annual national program, Give Kids a Smile.

Clean energy champions

A team of U-M engineering graduate students won the $50,000 top prize in the Michigan Clean Energy Venture Challenge for their unmanned-aerial-vehicle technology. SkySpecs LLC is developing small robotic helicopters that could remotely gather inspection data from hard-to-reach or hazardous places in infrastructure such as bridges and wind turbines.

The art of making a movie

Early on a recent Sunday morning, as many students lay blissfully asleep, a 30-person film crew took over the basement of North Quad. A team of industry professionals and U-M students and alumni were filming the trailer for Associate Professor Andy Kirshner’s new musical film project, “Liberty’s Secret.”
