A multidisciplinary team of U-M students called the Pantanal Partnership spent the summer in the Pantanal wetlands of Brazil developing technologies that can power and sustain a rural community center. They hope their efforts will help stem the exodus of rural Brazilians to the big cities by making the region more self-sustainable.

Instrumental learning

U-M students from the School of Art & Design and the College of Engineering learn how to mold, cast and tune musical instruments in a class titled Shaping the Sound of Bronze. This multi-disciplinary course culminates in an end-of-semester performance where the students play the metallaphones and gongs they made themselves.

Exercising their policy knowledge

Ford School graduate students recently took part in an integrated policy exercise, a three-day simulation of policymaking scenarios. This year's theme revolved around the alleged poisoning of waterways along the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas and its potential effect on immigration policy, commerce, energy dependence, homeland security, public health, and poverty.

More than 1,000 U-M students danced for 30 hours straight to raise money for programs at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Dance Marathon at the University of Michigan, one of the largest student-run, nonprofit organizations on campus, celebrated its 15th year of helping kids by raising a record-breaking $510,325.76.

Match Day

Each year the U-M Medical School takes part in Match Day, a tradition where each fourth-year student gets randomly called to the front of the room to receive a sealed envelope containing a letter that tells them which residency program has selected them for training.

Festifall, an event where more than 1,000 campus organizations and university departments showcase what they have to offer to the student community and recruit new members, will take over the Central Campus Diag on Sept. 6. Its North Campus counterpart, Northfest, will take place on the North Campus Diag on Sept. 11.
