Access Keys

Access keys (keyboard shortcuts) have been defined for common navigational tasks. On most Windows browsers that support access keys, press the ALT key simultaneously with the assigned access key for a given task. On most supporting Mac browsers press the CONTROL key plus the access key.

While there are currently no standards for which action keys a user agent must use, most follow these conventions. However, some user agents depart from this, such as Opera which uses SHIFT + ESC + access key for both Windows and Mac. When using Internet Explorer for Windows, users must type ALT + access key followed by the RETURN key. In those browsers that support them, the following access keys are available:

Access Key: 1: Go to the home page of this site
Access Key: 2: Jump to the start of the content for the current page (preceding any on-page navigation)
Access Key: 3: Go to the Spanish-language home page of this site
Access Key: 4: Jump to the search form on the current page
Access Key: 5: Toggle between the graphical and text-only views for the current page
Access Key: 6: Jump to the audience-based site-wide navigation on the current page
Access Key: 7: Jump to the topic-based site-wide navigation on the current page
Access Key: 8: Jump to the top of the current page
Access Key: 9: Go to the contact information page of this site
Access Key: 0: Go to the accessibility information page of this site
